Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: All participants undergo a stress ECG before the study begins and are assessed by their GP as fit for exercise. All participants are already physically active and train at a gym, and will be given a new, tailored training plan. In addition, they have been trained to take capillary blood samples from their fingertips themselves. • Men and women aged 18 or over, registered at a gym • Abdominal obesity with a waist circumference >80cm for women or 94cm for men Plus 2 of the following factors - Elevated triglycerides > 150mg/dl (1.7mmol/L) - Low HDL cholesterol: women 130 mmHg or diastolic 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L)
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: • Overt type 2 diabetes mellitus • Acute hypothyroidism (< 2 years) • Pregnancy (up to six months prior to the start of the study) • Gynaecological conditions • Heart failure (EF < 55) • Performance-limiting peripheral arterial disease (Fontaine stage = II) • Unbalanced diet • Cardiac arrhythmias requiring treatment • Performance- or training-limiting degenerative joint diseases or muscular disorders • Performance-limiting kidney disease • Performance-limiting neurological disorder • History of oncological diseases (< 5 years) • Psychiatric and/or substance use disorders

| At the start (T0), and after 4 (T1), 8 (T2), 12 (T3) and 16 (T4) weeks, isometric strength tests for trunk flexion, extension, leg flexion and extension, as well as grip strength, will be assessed for all participants. Following two warm-up sets, the maximum contraction will be measured three times. In addition, at the same time points, body composition, BMI, muscle mass and fat mass are assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (Tanita, MC-780MA-N). | — |
