Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: A preoperative BMI = 30 kg/m² for both groups. For the intervention group: A confirmed diagnosis of "lipedema" according to S2k guidelines. For the control group: Participation in follow-up examinations at three, six, and twelve months.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: BMI threshold: Individuals with a preoperative BMI of less than 30 kg/m² were excluded, as a BMI = 30 kg/m² was required for both groups. Exclusion from the control group: Patients with a documented diagnosis of lipedema in their medical records were excluded from the reference group. Lack of follow-up: In the control group, patients who did not participate in the follow-up examinations at three, six, and twelve months were excluded. In the lipedema group, patients who attended fewer than two follow-up appointments within the first year after surgery were excluded. Anatomical demarcation in lipedema: During the diagnosis of the lipedema group, involvement of the hands and feet was explicitly excluded, as the disease typically affects only the extremities while sparing these areas. Timeframe: Patients whose bariatric surgery took place outside the timeframe from May 2011 to April 2023 were not considered.

The primary endpoint of this study was the analysis of the influence of group membership (lipedema group vs. control group) on the postoperative weight loss trajectory, defined as logarithmized relative weight (the quotient of current and preoperative body weight).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary endpoints included changes in Body Mass Index (BMI), percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), and the progression of body measurements assessed via Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) and Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR). Additionally, the study examined the dependence of weight loss on the factors of age at the time of surgery and preoperative baseline weight.
