Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: • Students and staff at the universities of Cologne and Münster who have had personal experiences with illness, dying, death, or grief in a university setting, with relevant impacts on their daily academic or professional lives. • Participation requires that participants have had personal experiences with serious illness, dying, death, or grief in a university setting. To account for potential recall effects, the questionnaire records the time elapsed since the event, and this is taken into account in the analysis. The target group is divided into two experience groups: Direct experiences: one’s own serious illness or health condition causing significant distress. Indirect experiences: illness, dying, or death of a close relative or friend, regardless of whether the participant played a caregiving or support role o Capacity to provide consent

Exclusion criteria: • No professional or academic affiliation with the University of Cologne or Münster • No personal experience with illness, dying, death, or grief, • Lack of capacity to give consent

| The primary objective of the study is to document the health-related psychosocial experiences, stressors, and support needs of students and staff as they cope with serious illness, dying, death, and grief in a university setting. Data collection will be conducted once (cross-sectionally) during the study period via an anonymous online survey and supplementary semi-structured qualitative interviews. The survey will capture experiences, stressors, existing support services, and support needs. The qualitative interviews will serve to explore these topics in greater depth. | — |
