Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
To evaluate the effectiveness of the parent program, families participate in five online surveys: 1) at the inpatient admission (T0: baseline), 2) at the inpatient discharge (T1), 3) one month (T2), 4) three months (T3: primary comparison point) and 5) six months (T4) after discharge. To assess the impact of parenting a child with chronic pain, the „The Bath Adolescent Pain – Parental Impact Questionnaire (BAP-PIQ)” (Jordan et al., 2008) was translated into the German language in accordance with scientific standards (for overview see Beaton et al., 2000) and validated multicentrically by a sample of N = 517 parents of children with chronic pain. On this basis, a German short version was created. The German short version of the BAP-PIQ is used for the assessment of the impact of parenting a child with chronic pain. The subscale „support of passive pain management“ at T3 serves as the primary endpoint. The German short version of the BAP-PIQ, including the subscale „support of passive pain management“ is assessed digitally on each of the five time points (T0-T4).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Parents - Impact on parenting a child with chronic pain: German short version of the „Bath Adolescent Pain – Parental Pain Questionnaire (BAP-PIQ)” (Jordan et al., 2008) to each time points (T0-T4) with the following subscales as secondary endpoints: - Depression - Anxiety - Child-related catastrophizing - Self-blame - Leisure functioning - Support of active pain management - Relationship with the child - Treatment satisfaction: Global item to assess the treatment satisfaction at inpatient discharge (T1), as well as 3 and 6 months after discharge (T3 and T4) - Implementation of treatment goals: Two global items to assess the implementation of treatment goals 3 and 6 months after inpatient discharge (T3 and T4) - Cooperation of parents with regard to the pain of their child: Global item to assess the cooperation of parents with regard to the pain of their child at inpatient admission and discharge (T0 and T1), as well as 3 and 6 months after discharge (T3 and T4) Children and Adolescents (patients): - Functional impairment in everyday life: Questions with regard to functional impairment in everyday life with the German Functional Disability Inventory – FDI-G (Offenbächer et al., 2016; Stahlschmidt et al., 2018; Walker & Greene, 1991) at T0-T1 and T3-T4 - Emotional Impairment: German short version of „The Revised Children’s anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS 11)“ (Chorpita et al., 2000; Grothus et al., 2025) to assess depression and anxiety at T0-T1 and T3-T4 - Pain: Pain characteristics (e. g., maximum and average pain intensity) and pain-related days absent from school with the „Deutschen Schmerzfragebogen für Kinder und Jugendliche (DSF-KJ)“ (Schroeder et al., 2010) as well as the pain severity with the „Pediatric chronic pain grading (P-CPG)“ (Grothus et al., 2024) at T0-T1 and T3-T4 - Pain-related self-efficacy: German version of the „Scale for Pain Self-Efficacy (SPaSE)“ (Stahlschmidt et al., 2023) at T0-T1 and T3
