Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: -inpatient stay -elective surgery -date of surgery between 07/01/2020 and 06/30/2022 or between 07/01/2023 and 06/30/2025 -surgical service: general/visceral surgery, orthopaedic/trauma surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, gynaecology, urology

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: -cardiac surgery -surgery of the lungs or bronchi -pregnant or breastfeeding patients -cases in which the occurrence of the primary endpoint cannot be determined

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome is the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC), which is a dichotomous composite endpoint consisting of acute respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, pneumothorax, acute respiratory failure, invasive/noninvasive mechanical ventilation or tracheotomy. The data were collected retrospectively using routine data provided by the medical controlling of the University Hospital Düsseldorf. The endpoint is considered to have occurred if at least one of its components was coded during the respective hospital stay.

MeasureTime frame
Secondary outcomes are the following: Each component of the primary PPC composite endpoint, PPC without ventilation component, noninvasive mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit stay, duration of intensive care unit stay, postoperative length of hospital stay, in-hospital mortality. The severity of PPC may be analysed exploratorily.
