Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (HbA1c = 6.5% or fasting glucose = 126 mg/dL or antidiabetic medication following diagnosis).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Known Chronic conditions other than factors associated with metabolic syndrome (obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and, if applicable, related medication), with the exception of cardiovascular diseases that do not limit exercise capacity and where a medical exercise stress test has confirmed that the physical demands of the study can be well tolerated. Specific exclusion criteria include, for example, uncontrollable cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure (EF < 55), or peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (Fontaine stage = II). Severe degenerative joint diseases or muscular disorders that significantly limit mobility also lead to exclusion from the study. Additional exclusion criteria include: hormone replacement therapy, smoking status, acute oncological diseases or a history thereof (< 5 years), infections (HIV, hepatitis), and psychiatric and/or substance use disorders.
