Conditions

Need for endotracheal intubation ( OPS 8-71 ) P07.2 Z38.0

Interventions

Group 1: Intervention Group/ EIT-group (n=30) Before a planned endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation for a scheduled elective procedure in pediatric cardiac surgery or pediatric surgery (
if necessary, the tube depth is adjusted. Planned measurement duration with the belt: approximately 10 minutes around the intubation. At the end of the procedure, the EIT belt is reapplied to monitor

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: All preterm infants, term newborns, and children undergoing an elective surgical procedure with planned intubation anesthesia may be included in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) Patients receiving palliative care 2) Patients with known malformations of the airways (larynx and trachea/bronchi) 3) Lack of parental consent prior to the elective procedure 4) Contraindication to performing EIT measurement according to approval (e.g., presence of a pacemaker) or inability to perform EIT measurement on the thorax due to wound dressings or indwelling drains.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Diagnosis of incorrect endotracheal tube placement based on the following two parameters: a) Center of Ventilation (x/y): target value 0.5 (± 0.05) b) Region of Interest: ventral/dorsal and right/left ? target value: 50:50 (± 5%)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1) Median values of various EIT indices: a) Global Inhomogeneity Index (GI Index) b) Center of Ventilation c) Silent Spaces d) End-Expiratory Lung Impedance (EELI) 2) Misplacement of the tube outside the trachea (esophageal intubation)
