Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Geriatric patients: Capacity to give informed consent (through a legal representative if necessary), knowledge of German, 65 years and older Healthy older participants: No severe or cardiometabolic diseases, BMI 20–30 kg/m², 70 years and older Healthy younger participants: No chronic diseases, BMI 20–25 kg/m², 18-40 years

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Geriatric patients: Acute delirium, acute sepsis, life expectancy 30 kg/m² Young, healthy participants: Chronic diseases, BMI 25 kg/m²

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary objective of the study is to gain insights into the pathological mechanisms underlying sarcopenia and the relationship between muscle wasting and other comorbidities, which could be useful for identifying potential therapeutic approaches. The primary outcome of the study is the quantification of the diameter of differentiated primary muscle cells from healthy individuals following treatment with serum from various sources (from geriatric sarcopenic and multimorbid patients, as well as sarcopenic and multimorbid patients; and from healthy older and younger individuals).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The secondary outcome is the evaluation of anabolic (PI3K/AKT/mTOR) and catabolic (FOXO/MuRF1/MAFbx) signaling pathways in primary muscle cells following treatment with sera of various origins.
