Inclusion criteria: o Age =60 years o ability to give informed consent o sufficient knowledge of the German language to complete a questionnaire in German language and to understand the study procedures and instructions in German o The ability to prepare meals independently and to eat meals without the help of others o Adherence to an omnivorous/mixed diet, vegetarian diet, or vegan diet for at least one year without interruption. The three groups to be studied are defined by the study protocol as follows: Mixed/omnivorous diet: Contains foods from at least one of the following food groups: meat, fish or seafood, dairy products. Vegetarian diet: Contains neither meat nor fish, but includes foods from at least one of the following food groups: dairy products, eggs, honey. Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Dietary protein intake from foods based on a 3-day weighed food diary. Mean protein intake (in g/d) will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| o Mean intake of other macro- and micronutrients (in mg/d or g/d) based on a 3-day weighed food diary. Mean intakes will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. o PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load), UPRAL (Urinary Potential Renal Acid Load), and NEAP ??(Net Endogenous Acid Production) as estimates of the dietary acid load based on 3-day weighed food intake records (mean in mEq/d) or 24-hour urine collection (UPRAL). Mean values will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. o Urea nitrogen and protein excretion in 24-hour urine collection (mean in g/24h). Mean values will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. o Dynanometer-based non-invasive handgrip strength measurements (in kg). Mean values will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. o Measurement of the fat-free mass (in %) using bioimpedance analysis (BIA). Mean values will be compared between the omnivorous, the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet group. | — |
