Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Upper jaw: complete permanent dentition up to and including the first molars (part 1), permanent incisors (part 2) - Lower jaw: permanent incisors - Patients <22 years of age (part 1) or without upper age limit (part 2), provided that certain permanent teeth are present (see above). In accordance with physiological eruption times, this corresponds to a minimum age of 12 ± 1 years in Part 1 and 8 ± 1 years in Part 2. - Patients of any gender - Good oral health (approximal plaque index API = 40%) - No inflammatory processes such as gingivitis, periodontitis or abscesses (probing depth = 3 mm, no radiologically detectable bone loss) - Pre-therapeutic clinical diagnostics available (medical history, jaw models, OPG)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Smoking - Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) during the last month or antibiotics during the last 3 months prior to and during orthodontic treatment - Previous or current craniofacial fractures, craniofacial syndromes/anomalies, including cleft lip, jaw and palate - Untreated carious lesions - Autoimmune diseases

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
- cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid (CGF) - extent and velocity of orthodontic tooth movement of the upper incisors, determined by superimposition of digital dental casts - prevalence and extent of external root resorptions at the upper incisors, determined through a comparison of the pre-treatment orthopantomogram (OPG) and the OPG made after retraction of the upper incisors

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- immune cells in the GCF - eventually expression of genes of immune cells in the GCF

Germany
