Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: -Adult patients/individuals (18yrs – 85yrs) -Patients (?18yrs) with a history of a) acute lumbosacral radicular symptoms (L4-S1 dermatome) caused by acute lumbar disk herniation and/or b) chronic spondylotic foraminal stenosis We will include patients with the clinical diagnosis of an acute (6 months) unilateral lumbar radicular symptoms. The diagnosis lumbar radiculopathy with be made by an Orthopaedic Surgeon according to the following criteria: radiation of leg pain distal to the knee, neurologic signs and symptoms including sensory symptoms, numbness, or pain in the L1-S1 dermatome, weakness in one or more adjacent myotomes (e.g. L4-S1: tibialis anterior- , extensor hallucis longus, peroneus longus/brevis muscle), or diminished deep tendon (patellar- and/or Achilles) reflex testing.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Pediatric patients (<18yrs) • Severe active medical or psychiatric co-morbidities that would limit study participation • Previous back surgery

-To evaluate MRI DWI findings of the lumbar spinal nerves in symptomatic patients suffering from lumbar nerve root entrapment syndromes -To correlation pathomorphologic findings and with a) DWI images / ADC maps of symptomatic nerve roots with recently established normative values of asymptomatic, healthy individuals, b) and comparison of DWI images / ADC maps of symptomatic nerve roots with the unaffected contralateral side -To assess the diagnostic performance of MRI DWI technology in comparison to established diagnostic tools (standard MRI protocol, magnetic resonance myelography (MRM)
