Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Age 18 or older - Capacity to consent and written consent to participate in the study after receiving detailed information - Native German speaker - No relevant noise exposure (>85 dB(A)) within the last 24 hours before the start of the test - Normal hearing according to WHO classification (classification is determined by audiometry)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Central nervous system disorders affecting cognition - Retrocochlear disorders - Early stages of conductive hearing loss despite normal hearing (see above) - Noise exposure >85dB(A) in the preceding 24 hours - Non-native speakers

MeasureTime frame
Percentage of correctly understood words in the Freiburg speech test in quiet and under noise conditions (measured at signal-to-noise ratios of +5 dB and +10 dB at 65 dB SPL, or 80 dB SPL if necessary). The evaluation is stratified by age group (20–40, 40–60, 60–80, >80 years) and degree of hearing loss (according to WHO criteria: normal hearing, mild, moderate, severe hearing loss). This endpoint serves to quantitatively assess speech comprehension under noisy conditions depending on age and hearing status and enables a direct answer to the primary question.

MeasureTime frame
Sentence comprehension threshold (SRT) in the Oldenburg Sentence Test (OLSA) under noise conditions, also differentiated by age and hearing groups. Comparison of the results of the Freiburg Speech Test and the OLSA to evaluate the diagnostic significance of both methods with regard to speech comprehension in noise. Analysis of the relationship between audiometrically determined hearing threshold (tone audiogram) and functional speech comprehension in noise, to identify potential discrepancies (e.g., in older people with normal hearing). Descriptive recording of age-related changes in speech comprehension, independent of pure hearing loss.
