11 years with no suspected speech sound disorder were assessed with an inconsistency test/speech screening and tasks for non-word repetition, stimulability of phones and articulatory diadochokinesis
cross-sectional (N = 351) and longuitudinal (N = 302) testing Group 2: Children with diagnosed speech sound disorders aged 3

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Arm 1: typical general development, monolingual German Arm 2: diagnosed speech sound disorder, monolingual German

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Arm 1: diagnosed developmental language disorder or speech sound disorder, current or previous speech and language therapy Arm 2: further developmental difficulties affecting language and speech acquisition (e.g. cleft palate, hearing impairment, neurological disorder, ...)

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcome is to gather developmental data from typically developing children for three newly designed (non-word repetition, stimulability of phones and articulatory diadochokinesis) and one revised (inconsistency test) speech assessments at various testing points (initial assessment (T1), retest reliability after 6-14 days, and follow-up after three/six/nine months - depending on age at T1). Additionally, the reliability (retest and inter-rater reliability) of the assessments will be evaluated.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The secondary outcome is the investigation on suitability of these assessment tasks for early identification of speech sound disorders (predictive validity) and differential diagnosis of various subtypes of speech sound disorders (diagnostic validity). Furthermore, it will be investigated which scoring criteria within the assessment tasks will exhibit the strongest explanatory power.
