Group 1: Retrospective analysis of all patients who received an ECMO circuit exchange during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vv-ECMO) for COVID-19-associated ARDS.

Inclusion criteria: Admission to the Anaesthesia Intensive Care Unit with COVID-19 associated severe

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: No ECMO system exchange

MeasureTime frame
To determine the inter- and intra-individual variability of D-dimer kinetics over the seven days preceding and following an ECMO system change and to assess the effect of the 'ECMO system change' interaction on D-dimer level trajectories using a linear mixed model. Longitudinal data on coagulation, inflammation and ECMO performance parameters were retrospectively collected from patient charts. All patients who received venovenous ECMO (vvECMO) between 1 August 2020 and 1 May 2022 were included.

To determine A) whether major bleeding complications occur more frequently in close temporal association with ECMO system changes, and to B) identify predictors of major bleeding based on the trajectory of coagulation, inflammation, and ECMO performance parameters.
