Interventions

Group 1: This retrospective study includes all patients who underwent clinically indicated MRI examinations and were diagnosed with hydrocephalus between 2018 and 2025.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with pre- and post-operative MRI following ventricular shunt placement Patients with an available thin-slice imaging dataset

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: No preoperative imaging available prior to shunt placement Tumor or other space-occupying lesions, such as hemorrhage

Primary Endpoint: Analysis of the enlargement of the olfactory bulb cavity (Olfactory Bulb Cavity / Olfactory Bulb Ventricle) in pediatric patients with hydrocephalus, comparing pre- and post-decompression MRI examinations. The objective is to determine whether patients with enlarged lateral ventricles also show a proportional enlargement of the olfactory bulb cavity and to what extent this correlates with ventricular volumes. Hypothesis: Enlargement of the olfactory bulb cavity occurs in parallel with ventricular dilation, indicating a potential functional or anatomical connection between the olfactory bulb cavity and the cerebrospinal fluid system. Data collection will be completed once a statistically evaluable number of patients (approximately 30) has been reached.

Secondary Endpoints: Investigation of the anatomical and imaging correlation between the extent of the olfactory bulb cavity and the degree of ventricular enlargement. Assessment of a possible regression of olfactory bulb cavity enlargement after decompression of the ventricular system. Evaluation of potential age- or development-related differences in olfactory bulb cavity size in children and adolescents.
