Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Study cohort of the DFG-funded IMPROVE study Patients undergoing major abdominal surgery who meet the following criteria: 45 years or older and additionally at least one of the following: Physical capacity of less than 4 METs (metabolic equivalents) Pre-existing kidney damage Coronary artery disease Heart failure Moderate or severe valvular heart disease History of stroke COPD or pulmonary fibrosis Medically managed diabetes mellitus Immunosuppression due to disease (e.g., HIV, leukemia, cancer) or medication Liver cirrhosis BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher Smoking history of 15 pack-years 65 years or older Anesthesia duration of at least 180 minutes BNP >200 ng/L within the last 6 months

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: History of organ transplantation, emergency surgeries, pregnancy, or (any type of) transplantation
