Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion Criteria – Study Group (Periodontitis) Age: 18–65 years Clinically and/or radiologically confirmed diagnosis of generalized chronic or aggressive marginal periodontitis At least 5 teeth showing: Probing depth =4 mm at one or more of six sites and/or furcation involvement and/or radiographic horizontal or vertical attachment loss and/or tooth loss due to periodontal disease Inclusion Criteria – Control Group (Healthy) Age: 18–65 years Clinical and radiological findings without evidence of marginal periodontitis No tooth with: Probing depth =4 mm Furcation involvement Radiographic attachment loss Pathological mobility Tooth loss of non-traumatic origin
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion Criteria – Both Groups Congenital or acquired bleeding disorders Immunosuppression (e.g., medication, HIV, cancer, autoimmune disease) Artificial heart valves, severe hepatic, neurological, or psychiatric disease Systemic infections Disorders of collagen synthesis Known hypersensitivity to skin disinfectants Language barriers or inability to give informed consent
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Evaluation of the association between periodontitis-specific biomarkers in saliva and/or blood and the clinically determined disease activity of marginal periodontitis. The aim is to identify biomarkers that allow for reliable diagnosis and differentiated monitoring of disease progression. | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Changes in biomarker concentrations over time (baseline, 6 months, 12 months) in relation to clinical improvement or deterioration of periodontitis. Comparison of expression levels of specific biomarkers (e.g., MMP-8, IL-1ß, osteocalcin, SP-D) between patients with and without periodontitis. Correlation of specific biomarkers with clinical parameters, such as probing depth, attachment loss, and bleeding on probing. Analysis of the impact of systemic cofactors (e.g., smoking, diabetes, stress) on biomarker expression. Evaluation of diagnostic performance (sensitivity, specificity) of individual markers to distinguish between healthy and diseased individuals. | — |
