Group 1: Patients with essential tremor and present deep brain stimulation of the nucleus ventralis intermedius. Patients with DBS complete the motor learning experiment (= training) pseudorandomized

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Specific for persons with essential tremor and condition after VIM-DBS: condition after implantation of a deep brain stimulation system of the nucleus ventralis intermedius and current therapy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Non-consent of the subject to participate in the study; alcohol/drug abuse (current or history); other neurological diseases with the exception of essential tremor; depression (BDI > 19 points); inability to perform the experimental tasks; pregnancy according to self-report; relevant cognitive impairment (MOCA score < 18).

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary endpoints of the study are the immediate training-induced improvement in task performance (“online learning”) and the consolidation of task performance after 6 hours in a comparison of deep brain stimulation switched on and off. The data is collected by means of a computer experiment and analyzed using Matlab scripts established by the working group.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Effects of the exact electrode position of deep brain stimulation of the nucleus ventralis intermedius on clinical symptoms (tremor) and learning parameters (online learning and consolidation). The individual electrode position is reconstructed using the preoperative MRI and postoperative CT already available at the start of the experiment and further analyzed using freely available software (LEAD DBS) and our own Matlab scripts.
