Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Healthy, BMI 25 to 35, physically inactive, without significant risk factors. Training status: In the last 6 months no regular endurance (less than 1.5 hours per week) or strength training (less than 2 hours per week) or less than 2 hours per week of other exercise, no history of high-performance training

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Internal or orthopedic conditions for which maximal exertion or running training is contraindicated. A relative maximal oxygen uptake of = 45 ml/min/kg (female) or = 50 ml/min/kg (male) will lead to exclusion, as these values are considered indicative of a trained status. Exclusion criteria also include: clinically significant anemia requiring treatment, resting blood pressure = 160/100 mmHg, total cholesterol level = 300 mg/dl, BMI > 35 kg/m², diagnosed neurological or psychiatric disorders, as well as claustrophobia or fear of masks. The use of medications that may directly influence study outcomes (e.g., beta blockers) will also result in exclusion, as will pregnancy.

MeasureTime frame
The aim of the study is to determine the perceived exertion, affective valence, action crisis, heart rate, oxygen uptake, and lactate concentration, as well as their interdependencies during four runs with different intensities but the same training dose. The perceptual assessment parameters are recorded at nine isocaloric time points using validated single-item scales. Heart rate and oxygen uptake are measured continuously via telemetry and breath-by-breath analysis, respectively, while lactate concentration is determined at four time points through capillary blood sampling.
