Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Open surgical repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm • Surgery at Magdeburg University Hospital • Period: 2006 to 2022 • Use of a modified suturing technique from the Vascular Surgery Department • Availability of a clinical follow-up period of at least 12 months • Emergency treatment of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms • Conversion surgeries after EVAR • Revision surgeries due to long-term complications (e.g., endoleak, infection, recurrence) • Individual cases with aneurysms of the iliac artery or superior mesenteric artery (evaluated separately)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Endovascular or laparoscopic procedures • Use of a different suture technique • Mesh insertion during the index surgery • Death before 12 months of follow-up • Follow-up < 12 months (even with complete documentation) • Incomplete data sets (e.g., no surgical documentation or no follow-up) • Re-laparotomy with a new abdominal wall closure before the occurrence of an incisional hernia

• Association between incisional hernia incidence and statistically determined risk factors with significant influence (e.g., BMI, smoking status, duration of surgery, pre-existing conditions, etc.) • Comparison of our own surgical results on incidence determined using descriptive statistics with published data (PRIMA study, Dewulf et al. 2022) • Proportion of patients undergoing surgical revision due to an incisional hernia (as a measure of clinical relevance)
