Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Children with early childhood caries (ECC), age 2-6 years - Children with non-compliance for caries therapy under local anaesthetic - Parents or legal guardians of the above-mentioned children

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - General illnesses - Regular intake of medication - The legal guardians do not have sufficient knowledge of German to be informed about the treatment and the study procedure without an interpreter

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
1) Reduction in caries progression: Is caries progression (measured using the dmfs score and the number of "white spots") significantly lower in the MI intervention group than in the control group?

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1) Relationship between willingness to change and caries progression: Do children whose parents were found to have more change talk in the MI (measured using the MI-SCOPE) have less caries progression than children whose parents did not express any change talk? 2) Utilisation of follow-up appointments: Do participants in the intervention group attend more follow-up appointments than families in the control group? 3) Parental health awareness and behaviour: Do parents have increased oral health literacy health awareness and health-seeking behaviour after the MI intervention compared to the control group (as measured by dietary and behavioural questionnaires) 4) Improvement in weight Do children in the MI intervention group have a healthier BMI than children in the control group? 5) Reduced sugar consumption Do children in the MI intervention group consume less sugar than children in the control group? 6) Reduction in plaque formation rate: Is the plaque formation rate in the MI intervention group significantly better than in the control group after the intervention?
