Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary aim of this study is to investigate the tumor microenvironment in patients with malignancies of the head and neck region. To this end, tumor samples, adjacent tissue samples, as well as blood and saliva specimens are analyzed. The tumor microenvironment plays a central role in regulating the immune response and contributes to the immune evasion of malignant cells. By analyzing expression patterns both at the time of surgery and during the postoperative course, the study aims to examine the extent to which surgical tumor resection is associated with modulation of the systemic immune response. For comparison of immune status, a control group consisting of oncologically healthy patients is included. Blood, saliva, and tissue samples (from healthy oral mucosa) are collected from these individuals at the same time points as from the tumor patients, for example during surgical treatment of fractures. In the long term, the insights gained from this study are expected to enhance the understanding of the immunological tumor microenvironment and provide new starting points for immunotherapeutic interventions in malignancies of the head and neck region.

Additionally, various immune cells are inhibited in vitro using chemotherapeutic agents, immunotherapeutics, and irradiation, in order to evaluate the effects of these treatment modalities on the tumor microenvironment.
