Group 1: 20 healthy subject 20 patients with peripheral facial palsy Intervention: 10-day biofeedback training with OEMG measurements, 2 fMRI measurements (pre- and post-training)

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Patients: - Patients from the Facial Nerve Centre at Jena University Hospital with peripheral facial nerve palsy - Patients who cannot move their ears voluntarily 2. Healthy subjects: - No history of facial nerve palsy - No previous neurological or psychiatric illnesses - Subjects who cannot move their ears voluntarily

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Patients: - diagnosed neurological diseases (in addition to peripheral facial nerve palsy) that have the potential to negatively influence the measurements - Medication that can negatively influence the measurements - Patients who can move their ears voluntarily - Contraindications to MRI measurements (e.g. pacemaker, metal in the body, claustrophobia) - Previous surgery on the auricles or middle ear surgery - Lack of consent - Pregnancy at the time of measurement 2. Healthy subjects: - Diagnosed neurological diseases that have the potential to negatively influence the measurements - Medication that can negatively influence the measurements - Subjects who can move their ears voluntarily - Contraindications to MRI measurements (e.g. pacemaker, metal in the body, claustrophobia) - Previous surgery on the auricles or middle ear surgery - Lack of consent - Pregnancy at the time of the measurement

Increase in the measured electrical activity (in µV) of the extrinsic ear muscles in the OEMG after completion of the training programme compared to before the start of the training (individual observation of each extrinsic ear muscle)

1. Progressive increase in the measured electrical activity in the OEMG (in µV) at maximum effort of a single extrinsic ear muscle during the execution of the training program 2. increase in the speed (in seconds) at which multiple contractions of an extrinsic ear muscle can be performed after completion of the training program compared to before the start of the training program 3. Increase in holding time/endurance (in seconds) in the contraction of a single extrinsic ear muscle while the other extrinsic ear muscles remain at rest, after completing the training program compared to before the start of training (only the time in seconds in which the participant can maintain a contraction of the desired extrinsic ear muscle while the other extrinsic ear muscles are not contracted or have lower electrical activity than the target muscle is measured here) 4. Increase in precision/coordination (measured in %, in µV and in number n of successful contractions) during the execution of training tasks, after completion of the training program compared to before the start of training (defined as the participant briefly contracting only a single extrinsic ear muscle during the execution of the exercises in set 2 of the training paradigm (see 6.5 in the study protocol) and not straining the other extrinsic ear muscles) 5. Reduction of co-contractions of other facial muscles (measured in µV) during the two high-resolution OEMG measurements of other facial muscles after day 1 and day 10 of the training programme 6. Improvement in the subjective assessment of one's own training progress in the questionnaire after completing the training programme compared to before the start of the training programme 7. Reduction in the activated cortical areas during the execution of ear muscle contractions during an fMRI measurement after completion of the training programme compared to before the start of the training programme as a sign of learning success at the cortical level
