Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: The inclusion criteria for all participants are an age between 18 and 65 years. Patients with mental illness: Patients of the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics who are able to give informed consent and who have been diagnosed with a) depression (F33, F32, F31.3-31.5), b) alcohol dependence (F10.1, F10.2, F10.8, F10.9), c) borderline personality disorder (F60.31), or d) schizophrenia (F20.0-20.9) in inpatient or day-patient treatment. Patients with intestinal diseases: Inclusion criteria: Patients with bowel disease who are able to give informed consent and who are treated at the Department of Gastroenterology, Metabolic Diseases and Internal Intensive Medicine and who have been diagnosed with a) Crohn's disease, b) ulcerative colitis, or c) irritable bowel syndrome, and who are undergoing inpatient, day-care or outpatient treatment or who are in remission. Since irritable bowel syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion, the disease is diagnosed according to the current guideline (S3-Leitlinie Reizdarmsyndrom: Definition, Pathophysiologie, Diagnostik und Therapie. AWMF registration number 021/016). According to these guidelines, two components must be met for the diagnosis: 1. the patient's medical history, pattern and extent of symptoms are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome; 2. relevant differential diagnoses are excluded based on the symptoms.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for all participants are traumatic brain injuries, acute neurological diseases of the central nervous system, acute suicidality, non-existent or limited ability to consent, pregnancy, breastfeeding and contraindications to MR examinations. Further exclusion criteria for resilient subjects and control subjects are the presence of mental or intestinal illnesses. Another exclusion criterion for patients with intestinal diseases is the presence of mental illnesses.

MeasureTime frame
The main objective of this study is the precise characterisation at the individual level of structural, functional and metabolic changes in the brain in psychiatric disorders and intestinal diseases (IBS and IBD). These changes will be recorded using advanced neuroimaging techniques and correlated with neuropsychological test results and clinical parameters. In addition, the extent to which these changes are linked to the intestinal microbiota and how they develop after treatment will be investigated.

Psychiatric disorders: Identification of biomarkers and neuronal correlates of mental disorders using functional and structural imaging. Investigation of therapy-induced changes in functional connectivity, cortical thickness and neurometabolites (e.g. glutamate, GABA, myo-inositol) in correlation with clinical and neuropsychological parameters. Evaluation of therapy-induced neuronal plasticity as a potential indicator of treatment success. Bowel diseases (IBD & IBS): Investigation of neurotransmitter levels in the insula and hippocampus and their correlation with the bowel microbiota and neuropsychological test results. Analysis of BOLD signal fluctuations and connectivity patterns in fMRI to differentiate between IBD and IBS. Determining the relationships between microbial changes, metabolite concentrations, fMRI connectivity and neuropsychiatric measures.
