Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria Phase 1 (pretest stimuli): 1. in generally good health 2. age: 18 - 60 years 3. native German speakers Inclusion criteria phase 2: 1. diagnosis of a depressive episode according to ICD-10 (ICD-11) or DSM-V with a severity of mild or moderate. 2. age: 18 - 30 years 3. native German speaker 4. ability to read and understand written materials in German

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria Phase 1 (pretest stimuli): 1. hearing loss without correction 2. visual impairment without correction Exclusion criteria phase 2: 1. history of neurological disorders or voice disorders not related to depression 2. current therapy that impairs voice quality (e.g. SSRI medication and hoarseness) 3. history of substance abuse and dependence 4. diagnosis of an acute or chronic illness that may directly affect the voice 5. for participants with depression: no major depressive episode 6. for control participants: no depression and no psychotropic medication
