Group 1: Examination of patients with epilepsy: Each study participant is measured on a 3T MRI and a 7T MRI within a maximum of two consecutive days. Both scanners are located at the Cooperative Brain

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Healthy volunteers (no neurological diseases), epilepsy patients with diagnosed epilepsy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Previous brain surgery, medication that affects the release of neurotransmitters, active drug or alcohol addiction, pregnancy or breastfeeding, mental illness that could affect participation

MeasureTime frame
Determination of the accuracy of the concentration measurement of Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate in healthy volunteers and epilepsy patients using MRS at 3 Tesla (T) compared to 7T.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
(1) Explorative comparison of the concentrations of GABA and glutamate in epilepsy patients compared to a healthy age-matched control group; (2) Explorative comparison of the concentrations of GABA and glutamate in epilepsy patients with biopsy-proven limbic encephalitis and positive antibody detection against glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) or GABAA/B receptors in the amygdala compared to a healthy age-matched control collective.
