Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Sample of individuals with depression: presence of a diagnosis from the depressive spectrum according to ICD-10 (F32, F33, F34.1 und F43.20/F43.21), informed consent, sufficient German language skills (at least level B2) Sample of individuals without depression: score < 10 on the PHQ-8, informed consent, sufficient German language skills (at least level B2)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Presence of any psychotic disorder (F2x), any substance dependence disorder other than nicotine (ICD-10 F1x.2), acute suicidality, any impairment of facial expression, any type of dyschromatopsia

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Depressed mood as assessed with a 11-point visual analogue scale (0 = no depressed mood at all to 10 = very strong depressed mood). Depressed mood will be assessed continuously during the training (96 ratings in total).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- Positive mood, assessed with a 11-point visual analogue scale. Positive mood will be assessed continuously during the training (96 ratings in total). - Depressive symptoms, assessed with the German version of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (Hautzinger et al., 2012). Those will be assessed directly before the training and at a two-week follow-up. - Current suicidality, assessed with a single self-developed item. It will be assessed at a diagnostic session one week before the training, directly before and after the training, and at a two-week follow-up. - Emotional state, assessed with Part A of the Self-Report Instrument for the Assessment of Emotion-Specific Regulation Skills (ERSQ-ES; Ebert et al., 2014). It will be assessed at a diagnostic session one week before the training and at a two-week follow-up assessment. - Dysfunctional attitudes, assessed with the German short version of the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale version A (DAS-18-A; Rojas et al., 2015). They will be assessed at a diagnostic session one week before the training and at a two-week follow-up assessment. - Positive and negative automatic thoughts, assessed with the German version of the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire-Revised (ATQ-R; Pössel et al., 2005). They will be assessed at a diagnostic session one week before the training and at a two-week follow-up assessment. Additional outcomes: feasibility - compliance (self-constructed item) - usability, assessed with the User Experience Questionnaire (Schrepp et al. 2017) - acceptance (self-constructed items, User Experience Questionnaire) Feasibility-outcomes will be assessed directly after training completion.
