Group 1: Intervention Group: - Preoperatively: counting the chest hair per 1cm² - Intraoperatively: glove change, skin margin disinfection with iodine, skin margin coverage with two absorption pads

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - partial or total sternotomy - first cardiac surgery and sternotomy

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - other surgical access than median sternotomy - re-operation - skin diseases or infection on the chest, - endocarditis - immunosuppression - other antibiotic treatment than the routine antibiotic prophylaxis (Cefuroxime 1,5g) - iodine allergy - aortic surgery - surgery in hypothermic cardiac arrest

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Perioperative contamination, measured by the number of culture-positive swabs, amount of growth on agar and pathogen differentiation by MALDI-TOF, two weeks after the samples were taken during cardiac surgery.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Preoperative counting the number of hairs per 1 cm² using a template with a hole measuring 1 cm² over the sternum where the skin incision will be made
