Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Previous participation in the existing longitudinal study Crime in the modern City (CrimoC). - Age of majority (= 18 years) - Ability to give consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for all subject groups resulting from the MRI admission restrictions: - Metals or metal-containing devices that are in constant contact with the body, in particular: Pacemaker, internal defibrillator or other implants (shunts, catheters, clips made of metal), firmly bonded metallic retainer wires spanning more than four teeth or fixed metallic braces - Pregnant and breastfeeding women - Tattoos on the neck or on the face or head - Non-removable piercings - Inability to comply with the study protocol - Limited or completely suspended legal capacity or a court order for placement - Current neurological disorders - Epileptic seizures in the past - History of brain disease (e.g. hydrocephalus, brain tumor) or severe head injury (traumatic brain injury). - Pronounced claustrophobia

The overall aim of this research project is to investigate violent delinquency from an interdisciplinary perspective. Criminological and neuropsychological perspectives are combined by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess brain structure and function (but not neurotransmitter function) at multiple levels. The focus of the study is on the comparison between intensive violent offenders on the one hand and early declining non-intensive violent offenders and non-violent and non-delinquent individuals on the other. The results of these comparisons are embedded in the theoretical framework of a structural-dynamic model developed as part of the Crime in the modern City (CrimoC) panel study (https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fakultaeten/soziologie/forschung/projekte/krimstadt/projektportrait/konzeption/index.xml). This model is currently based on attitudes and behaviours at the individual level as well as two levels of social structure (in the form of social status, milieus, lifestyles, social relationships and formal social control). As the neurobiological data are collected retrospectively, the approach focuses on two research questions: Research question A To what extent are adolescent social and socio-psychological factors (already assessed between the ages of 13 and 30 in CrimoC) related to adult (4th decade) neurobiological, neuropsychological or psychopathological variables assessed in repeat violent offenders compared to occasional violent offenders or non-violent offenders? Can we predict neurobiological, neuropsychological or psychopathological status from these early assessments? Because these data were not collected in early adolescence, we can examine correlations but not causality.

Research question B To what extent do current neurobiological, neuropsychological or psychopathological variables characterise repeat violent offenders in adolescence and early adulthood - compared with occasional violent offenders or non-violent offenders? Can these reassessed variables be used to separate the groups? Although the planned data sources have been collected retrospectively, they will help to advance our knowledge in this area, not only by providing a deeper characterisation of the current sample, but also by facilitating the prediction of current neurobiological, psychopathological and neuropsychological outcomes on the basis of past criminal sociological data.
