Group 1: In total we will assess 30 patients with a diagnosed relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. Initially we are going to perform a neuropsychological assessment consisting of the Symbol Digit M

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Reconnaissance capability - Diagnosed relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - acute or chronic illnesses (e.g. dermatologic diseases, cardiovascular diseases) - presence of a neurologic disease (RRMS excluded) or psychiatric disease - Medication (exclusion: immunmodulatory medication in RRMS) - pregnancy

MeasureTime frame
taVNS (pulse width: 250µs, stimulation frequency: 25Hz, 30sec on/30sec off, Motion threshold: off, Ramp-up: off, Buzzer: off), vs a control condition improves processing speed ability (operationalized with the SDMT-accuracy before and after stimulation)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
(1) taVNS vs a control condition also improves processing speed ability in healthy individuals (2) magnitude of improvement is more pronounced in MS patients as compared to healthy controls (3) the magnitude of effect is modulated by additional disease variables (disease severity, fatigue, depression) (4) taVNS also has an effect on further non-motor symptoms in MS patients (such as fatigue or depression)
