Interventions
Group 1: (Pre change in clinical managemant)
- Resting energy expenditure (REE) using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula.
70% of REE for the first 0-72 hours
>72 hours, 100% of REE.
- Protein intake 1.5 g/kg body weight
- Parenteral nutrition in cases of contraindications for enteral nutrition or inadequate calorie intake from day 3 onwards.
Group 2: (Post
70% of REE for 25-72 hours
>72 hours, 100% of REE, considering individual metabolic tolerance (glucose and phosphate metabolism).
- Protein intake of 1.2 g/kg body weight
- Early supplementary parenteral nutrition from 24 hours

Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: - Neurological condition as the reason for admission to the intensive care unit - Expected length of stay exceeding 10 days - Inclusion within the first 48 hours after admission - Enteral or parenteral nutrition
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: - Previous stays in an intensive care unit for more than one day - Pre-existing muscle disease - Tetra- or paraplegia existing prior to admission
