Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Use of a cochlear implant, unilaterally or bilaterally - Legal age (18 years or older) - Participation in the scheduled study appointments at the Hearing Center Düsseldorf - English was learned as a foreign language at school - Written informed consent - Cochlear implantation took place at least six months prior

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - No written informed consent from the patient - Underage (younger than 18 years) - Sign language as first language - English not learned as a foreign language - Uncorrectable visual impairment / self-reported blindness

Comparison of speech perception in noise (SNR50) and subjective listening effort (RSME) between cochlear implant users (PwCI) and normal-hearing individuals (NH) under native and non-native language conditions. Specifically, differences in SNR50 between German (native language) and English (foreign language) were examined. Summary of the scientific endpoint: The aim of this study is to quantify the effects of language and hearing conditions (L1 vs. L2, PwCI vs. NH) on speech perception and cognitive load in order to draw conclusions about the specific challenges faced by multilingual PwCI in clinical practice.

Furthermore, the effects of the foreign language condition were examined both within and between groups (PwCI vs. NH), as well as differences in subjectively perceived listening effort (RSME) under the same conditions, and the relationship between self-assessed English language proficiency (CEFR) and perceived effort during speech-in-noise comprehension.
