Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) open reduction and dorsal spondylodesis performed in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine 2) the operation conducted by one of three senior operators.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) polytrauma patients (ISS > 16) 2) patients with open fractures of the spine 3) spinal conditions affected by tumorous diseases (either primary tumors or metastases) 4) pre-existing spine infections 5) documented infections or inflammatory diseases before surgery 6) incomplete patient records.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary endpoint was the measurement of inflammatory markers assessed preoperatively and at postoperative days 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The secondary endpoint was revision surgery due to the development of an early surgical site infection within 30 postoperative days.
