Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Active smoker Participation in a colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening, no medical indication (in the group of smokers with colonoscopy)
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Participation in a colonoscopy screening within the last 12 months (in the group of smokers without a colonoscopy) Insufficient German language skills

| Patients' motivation to stop smoking is assessed before and four weeks after the colonoscopy/GP appointment using the Motivation To Stop Scale (MTSS; Kotz et al., 2013). We will investigate whether participation in a colonoscopy screening has an effect on the motivation to stop smoking. Hypothesis 1: A negative result (no abnormalities) has a negative effect on the motivation to stop smoking (health certificate effect). Hypothesis 2: A positive result (e.g. removal of polyps/adenomas) has a positive effect on the motivation to stop smoking. In addition, at the first measurement point, we measure the needs and willingness of smokers to take advantage of support opportunities to stop smoking. | — |

| Compensatory health beliefs are also assessed in both groups at both measurement points using the smoking-specific CHB scale (Radtke et al., 2011). Research question: Do compensatory health beliefs influence the effect of colonoscopy on the motivation to stop smoking? Hypothesis 3: Compensatory health beliefs are more pronounced in the group of smokers with colonoscopy. (self-selection) As exploratory variables, smoking behavior is assessed using the Fagerström Test for Cigarette Dependence (FTND; Fagerström, 2012) and individual questions about smoking of cigarettes and other tobacco products, and beliefs about factors influencing the risk of colorectal cancer are assessed at both measurement points. | — |
