Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Age = 18 years - Diagnosis of unilateral diaphragmatic dysfunction - Informed and signed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Bilateral diaphragmatic paresis - Persons who are in a dependent or employment relationship with the examiner - Placement in an institution due to a court or official order - Incapacitated patients - Pregnancy and breastfeeding

MeasureTime frame
Mapping of diaphragmatic contractility by sonographic measurement of the "thickening fraction" (TF%) in the apposition zone of the diaphragm during palpation - medioclavicular - in the anterior, middle and posterior axillary line - and medioscapular with reference to the underlying etiology of the diaphragmatic dysfunction.

Comparison between the affected side of the diaphragm and the healthy side of the diaphragm - Sonographic mapping of the diaphragmatic thickness in the above-mentioned positions with reference to the underlying etiology and the duration of the diaphragmatic dysfunction - Magnetic resonance imaging mapping of denervation edema in the muscular parts of the diaphragm as a correlate of an axonal lesion of parts of the respective phrenic nerve in a subgroup of subjects with onset of symptoms <= 3 months earlier
