Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Dry eye requiring treatment: OSDI score = 13 and additionally 1. either non-invasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT) 5 corneal spots (Oxford scale = 1) + a low Schirmer I test of = 5 mm) Subclassification: Patients are classified as evaporative dry eye (EDE group) if they have a NIBUT of 5 mm. Patients are classified as hypovolaemic dry eye (ADDE group) if they have a low Schirmer I test of = 5 mm.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients who would not be able to attend the follow-up appointments due to other illnesses or who cannot give their consent to the study are excluded. Furthermore, corneal surgery, inflammatory eye diseases (e.g. uveitis), tumour diseases and treatment with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive medication in the last 3 months are exclusion criteria.
