Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Parkinson's disease diagnosis with akinetic-rigid type (n=40), specialist diagnosis - Höhn and Yahr>=2 - healthy control subjects (n=40) without neurodegenerative diseases - Regular use of a manual toothbrush for self-performed oral hygiene at home - = 10 natural teeth - Interest and consent to participate in the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Preexisting conditions that have a direct impact on manual dexterity (e.g. hemiparesis, pronounced arthrosis, gout on the upper extremities) - rejection of oscillating electric toothbrushes or electronic aids for self-performed oral hygiene - Höhn&Yahr 5 - Dementia (MOCA-instrument)

Phase A) The explorative analysis of the cleaning behavior of participants with Parkinson's disease and healthy controls shows differences Phase B) The 4-week use of an electric toothbrush leads to a lower plaque index (QHI) in people with Parkinson's disease than the use of a manual toothbrush. Phase A) The plaque reduction competence measured with the QHI before and after brushing is significantly greater in healthy controls than in participants with Parkinson's disease.
