Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Participants must be healthy adults.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Subjects will not be able to participate if they: (1) report any health condition (specifically, disorders affecting the musculoskeletal, circulatory, and autonomic systems); (2) are obese (BMI>30); (3) had previous injuries or surgeries of the spine; (4) are taking any medications (especially drugs affecting the circulatory system); (5) are smokers (consume tobacco); (6) receive any kind of therapy or treatment during the trial period; (7) are pregnant; and (8) are not able to provide informed consent (e.g., due to insufficient language skills). Furthermore, participation will be terminated if subjects are: (9) drinking alcohol, consuming caffeine, taking drugs, performing sports, using ointments or cosmetics, and sunbathing or showering on the day of each trial session.

Primarily, the effect of four osteopathic techniques, compared to four sham techniques, on the microcirculation of the lumbar myofascia (paravertebral between L2 and L3) in healthy subjects will be evaluated (from pre- to post-intervention) using laser Doppler flowmeter and white light tissue spectrometer.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondarily, the effect of the four osteopathic techniques, compared to four sham techniques, on the autonomic activity, skin temperature, tissue tension, and tissue elasticity will be evaluated (from pre- to post-intervention) in healthy subjects. The autonomic (cardiac) activity will be investigated by means of heart rate variability using an electrocardiogram (CardioSecur Pro). The skin temperature will be measured with infrared thermography (Hikmicro WPocket2) for a lumbar region (between the spinous process of L2 and L3 and the lateral edges of the erector spinae muscles). The tissue tension and elasticity will be assessed for the lumbar myofascia (paravertebral between L2 and L3) using myotonometry (MyotonPRO).
