Interventions
Group 1: Patients with existing or suspected sepsis or a severe infection. An additional blood tube ( 9 ml) is taken as part of the routine blood collection.

Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Adult male or female patients who are capable of giving consent
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: - Patients who refuse to give consent to sample collection or are incapable of giving consent. - Patients in whom blood cultures cannot be taken (e.g. due to unfavourable vascular conditions).
