Group 1: Children with biliary atresia from 1 year onwards, not transplanted and not actively listed for liver transplantation
dietary intervention with prebiotics for the duration of 8 weeks: Children receive corn starch 5 g ( 5 years) in addition to their regular diet. Stool samples will be obtained prior to study start and

beta diversity of gut microbiota from before to after nutritional intervention, change in fecal and serum bile acids, change in plasma endotoxin levels

Primary

MeasureTime frame
alpha diversity (Chao Index) based on 16s rRNA analysis of fecal microbiota composition before and after nutritional intervention. Primary endpoint is the change in alpha diversity as measured by the Chao Index from before to after intervention. Chao index will be calculated from 16srRNA based amplification of bacterial DNA in fecal samples.
