| The primary aim of the study is to investigate muscle mass. For this purpose, the muscle thickness of the M. rectus femoris is determined by ultrasound and the total body lean mass is estimated by multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and caliper utilizing a 3-compartment model . Measurements are made PRE, MID and POST. To control for muscle sparing factors, subjects will perform a daily food diary and three weekly standardized sessions of strength training under the supervision of an investigator. The exact times of data collection are as follows: day 1, a.m. (PRE); day 15, a.m. (MID); day 29, a.m. (POST): - muscle thickness of the rectus femoris muscle (ultrasound) - total lean mass (BIA and caliper) days 1-28, daily: - nutrition diary for each training session, 12x per subject in total: - training protocol | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| At the secondary level, the Maximum Voluntary Ismometric Contraction (MVIC) of knee extension is recorded at the PRE, MID, and POST time points. Furthermore total body fat mass and body fat percentage are estimated utilizing multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and caliper. Secondary analysis: A secondary analysis is included in the present study. Here, body composition data (total lean mass, total body fat, and body fat percentage) are collected via the SCANECA 3D body scanner and used to validate it, against the aforementioned 3C model using BIA and Caliper. The measurement with the SCANECA 3D body scanner takes place at the time point PRE in triplicate and at the time points MID and POST in single execution. Thus, data for the calculation of reliability can also be generated. The exact times of data collection are as follows: day 1, a.m. (PRE); day 15, a.m. (MID); day 29, a.m. (POST): - MVIC of knee extension - total body fat and body fat percentage (BIA & Caliper) - total lean mass, total body fat and body fat percentage (SCANECA 3D-Body-Scanner). | — |
