Interventions

Group 1: Hot arm bath at 43 °C water temperature for 5 minutes. Group 2: Thermo-indifferent arm bath at 28 °C water temperature for 5 minutes.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Arterial hypertension with a systolic blood pressure value > 150 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure value > 90 mmHg at the initial measurement on at least one upper arm on the first examination date. - Sufficient knowledge of German to understand the subject information. - Present and signed informed consent to participate in the study as well as privacy policy.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Blood pressure values that are elevated to such an extent that they require immediate medical care, according to the assesment of the study director (practicing physician). - Conditions such as NYHA stage IV heart failure, advanced tumor disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. - Pronounced polyneuropathy of the hands. - Skin eczema that does not allow to perform hot arm baths. - Dementia or psychiatric diseases that would interfere with study conduct according to protocol. - History of drug use or alcohol abuse at > 60 g/day in the past three months. - Pregnancy or lactation. - Severely limited mobility. - Life expectancy less than three months. - Participation in another study in the past four weeks. - Any finding that, in the judgment of the study director, renders the potential participant unsuitable for study participation.

a) Do hot arm baths with a duration of five minutes lead to a reduction in systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure, compared to thermo-indifferent arm baths; measuresd 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after termination of the arm bath? b) Do hot arm baths with a duration of five minutes lead to a change in heart rate, compared to thermo-indifferent arm baths; measuresd 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after termination of the arm bath? c) Do hot arm baths with a duration of five minutes lead to a change in skin temperature at hand and feet, compared to thermo-indifferent arm baths; measuresd 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 and 90 minutes after termination of the arm bath? d) Do the changes in blood pressure correlate with the changes in skin temperature at hand and/or feet? e) Do the changes in blood pressure correlate with the preinterventional blood pressure? f) Do the changes in blood pressure correlate with the participant's Body-Mass-Index (BMI)?
