Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: • Staff in the participating ICUs, • Has been worked in the participating ICU for at least two years. • Leading members of the participating intensive care units, • Employees of the management area with at least two years of responsibility for one of the participating intensive care units, • Employees in coordinative, supervising respectively advisory function for intensive care units, • Speaks and understands German.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Participatory observations: • Situations in which one person present presents verbally or non-verbally indications of disapproval about researcher`s observation or presence trough facial expressions, gestures or other expressions. Interviews: • Trainees in nursing or therapeutic professions or students of human medicine, • Group of relief employees "pool of temporary staff" • Employees who have been in their job or function for less than two years, • Employees without responsibility for one of the participating intensive care units.

MeasureTime frame
The study, using a mixed-methods approach, primarily pursues qualitative research methods. Adherence is the main focus with following points: • Employees’ adherence among noise management in the ICU. • Adherence to noise management in intensive care units from the perspective of managers and persons of the coordinating area. • Potential factors influencing adherence to noise management in the ICU. Adherence will be assessed through qualitative research methods. First, participatory observations take place in a period of four weeks, to record the behaviour towards noise in the daily routine of the ICU ward. The analyses are descriptive in nature and follow grounded theory. Taking into account the findings from the observations, in another four weeks period, semi-structured interviews will be conducted to deepen the findings. The analyses are descriptive in nature and follow qualitative content analyse.

Further objectives are: Noise or sound levels in the individual ICUs measured as the mean sound level LAeq,1min aggregated per hour by calculating the energetic mean at the beginning of the 2. Iteration (P3.1) compared to the end of intervention phase from Silent ICU (PS1.3). Noise or sound levels in the individual intensive care units recorded at the following three defined periods throughout the project duration: • At the beginning of the data collection, before the participatory observations (phases 3.1.). • To the end of the participatory observations (phases 3.2), last two weeks. • To the end of the interviews (phases 3.3), last two weeks. The following measured values will be collected: o Mean sound level LAeq,1min, o Maximum values LAFmax, o Maximum peak values LCpeakmax. The measurements are aggregated per hour and per time of day (daytime and night-time). For the mean sound levels LAeq,1Min, the aggregation is done by calculating the energetic mean values over the hour or time of day; for the maximum values LAFmax and the maximum peak values LCpeakmax, the aggregation is done by determining the maxima over the hour or time of day.
