Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - mechanical ventilation - meeting the criteria of one of the following subgroups (retrospective re-assignment possible) 1. bacterial ARDS (according to Berlin-Definition of ARDS and typical radiological finding or pathogen detected in respiratory specimen) 2. viral ARDS (according to Berlin-Definition of ARDS and molecular detection in respiratory specimen) 3. lack of viral/bacterial infection and no evidence of systemic infection in clinically/laboratory investigation

Exclusion criteria: - allocation to one of the subgroups impossible

MeasureTime frame
- blood cell aggregates (assessed using DHM within 48h from intubation or ARDS diagnosis (t0), on day 2-4 (t1) and on day 5-7 (t2) if still hospitalized, once before discharge (tf), and in ICU patients every 3-4 days) - antigen- and cell-specific cytokine release (using flow cytometry upon stimulation within 48h from intubation or ARDS diagnosis (t0), on day 2-4 (t1) and on day 5-7 (t2) if still hospitalized)

- cell granularity - mortality - ventilator-free days within the first 28 days on ICU - oxygenation index - Extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) - superinfection
