Group 1: The study includes patients who have undergone gastrointestinal or vascular surgery with laparotomy between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2020 at the University Medical Center Halle (Saale).

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: • Gastrointestinal or vascular surgery with laparotomy (midline incision, transverse incision, subcostal incision, Pfannenstiel incision) • Surgery in the period from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2020 • Surgery was planned

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Absent ability to provide informed consent • A utilitiy incision to remove the resection specimen during a laparoscopic procedure is not considered a laparotomy • Re-laparotomy within 30 days after primary surgery • Conversion to laparotomy during laparoscopic surgery

• Incidence of incisional hernia throughout the postoperative period up to the time of data collection • Therapeutic relevance of a developed incisional hernia (none, symptomatic treatment, surgery) • Frequency of hospital readmissions due to complications caused by incisional hernia • Occurrence of a postoperative fascial dehiscence • Frequency and severity of postoperative complications (according to the Clavien-Dindo-Classification) • Frequency and severity of SSI (Surgical Site Infection, severity according to CDC-Classification) • Frequency, timing and reason for a re-laparotomy after primary surgery
