Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: age = 65 years; increased risk of falling (timed up and go > 12 s, habitual gait speed < 1.0 m/s and/or fall in the previous year); walking without aid =2 min; ability to consent; written informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: cognitive impairment (Mini-Mental State Examination < 24 points); severe neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic, mental or psychiatric disorders

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Reactive balance assessed (1) during standing using the Stepping Threshold Test and (2) during walking using a video-based motion analysis. Assessment time points are before (T1) and after the 6-week intervention phase (T2) and another 6 weeks after the end of the intervention (T3).

Four-Square Step Test, Brief Balance Evaluation Systems Test, instrumented 10-m gait analysis, 2-min Walk Test, Short Physical Performance Battery, Timed Up and Go, sensor-based activity monitoring, Falls-Efficacy Scale-International, Trail Making Test A & B, self-perceived difficulties & anxiety during perturbation-based treadmill training (PBT) and acceptance of PBT (via quesionnaire and focus groups)
