Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: To reliably classify participants into a group, the online survey asks filter questions about experiences with chronic pain episodes, i.e., >3 months of persistent or recurrent pain (Treede et al., 2019) and everyday pain (e.g., headache or toothache). Group of people with no experience of chronic pain episodes: Participants are included if they are at least 18 years old; have sufficient knowledge of German (spoken and written); have no history of chronic musculoskeletal pain; and have no medical background. Group of people with chronic musculoskeletal pain: Participants will be included if they are at least 18 years old; have sufficient knowledge of German (spoken and written); and have no red flags related to chronic musculoskeletal conditions eg. recently suffered severe trauma; have unintentional weight loss (of more than 10% body weight); have a history of cancer (in the past 5 years); are taking medications daily (e.g., pain medications); or have paresis and sensory disturbances (Lüdtke, Grauel, & Laube, 2015).
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Related to both groups: Participants suffering from nociplastic pain, neuropathic pain, and/or "cancer-related pain" will be excluded.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| The study aims to translate the questionnaire "PBQ" into German, to adapt it cross-culturally and to evaluate it psychometrically in order to investigate the current understanding and beliefs of German-speaking populations without experience of chronic pain episodes about the causes and consequences of musculoskeletal pain as comprehensively as possible. | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Realization of a validity and reliability study with examination of: Convergent validity (between the PBQ-G and "multidimensional health locus of control“ (MHLC)), "known-groups validity" (n=100) – people with chronic musculoskeletal pain (n=50), content validity (understandability and practicality) and correlations between sociodemographic factors (Gender and educational status have an impact on beliefs about causes and consequences of pain) with PBQ scores ("organic beliefs score" and "psychological beliefs score"). In addition, an exploratory survey will be conducted to determine whether medical background has an influence on pain beliefs (organic beliefs score and psychological beliefs score). Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, measurement error 95% confidence interval (standard error of the measurement (SEM), limits of agreement (LOA), mean session difference, and minimal detectable change (MDC)). | — |
