Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Gestational age < 32 bw, chronological age < 8 d, invasive ventilation (conventional ventilation or HFO) because of respiratory distress syndrome (radiologic, surfactant administration), tube leak less than 30%, signed informed consent from guardian.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Severe connatal pulmonary or cardiac malformations, chromosomal abnormalities, respiratory failure under invasive ventilation (pCO2 > 70 mmHg, FiO2 > 0.7).

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Influence of inspiratory time on gas flow and airway pressure measured by intratidal respiratory mechanics analysis

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Determination of the variability of time constants in preterm infants, influence of inspiratory time on compliance and resistance using intratidal respiratory mechanics analysis, influence of inspiratory time on transpulmonary pressures, influence of inspiratory time on the required inspiratory pressure at constant tidal volume, and influence of inspiratory time on lung ventilation measured by electrical impedance tomography.
