Eligibility
Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1) Children = 12 years of age requiring MRI of the head under procedural sedation for medical reasons 2) Written informed consent form parents/legal guardians before enrolment
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1) Refusal to participate in the study by guardians and/or children 2) Patients with a known instability of the cervical spine 3) Patients with airway abnormalities 4) Patients with tracheostomy 5) Poor image quality of the MRI images, which would make a qualitative intertpretation impossible.
Design outcomes
Primary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| Angular range [in degrees] of head extension in defined age groups, which has the largest volumetric diameter of the air column [cm3] (=”optimal positioning”). | — |
Secondary
| Measure | Time frame |
|---|---|
| 1) Correlation of the optimal positioning on the MRI image with the clinical assessment (thoracic excursions, work of breathing, breathing sounds) of the anesthesiologist 2) Correlation of optimal positioning with the capnography curve (etCO2). Since the respiratory gas flow depends on the condition of the upper airways, changes in head position that has a relevant effect on the airways are also reflected in the capnography curve (area under the CO2 curve). 3) Description of other measures and manoeuvres that may be required to maintain a patent airway, e.g. chin lift, Esmarch manoeuvre or devices to maintain a patent airway | — |
