Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Men and women Age: 30 - 65 years Type 2 diabetes (BMI > 25 kg/m²) Capacity to consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or non-manifest diabetes mellitus or metabolically healthy subjects. Acute illnesses within the last 2 weeks before the examination Autoimmune diseases and immunocompromising diseases (leukocytes 1.5 mg/dl) Cardiovascular diseases: CHD, PAVK, insult, TIA, aortic aneurysm, heart failure, chronic venous insufficiency Anemia (Hb 1 year), intake of alcohol (men > 30 g/d, women > 20g/d) or drugs, psychiatric diseases Risk for/or manifest AIDS (HIV) or hepatitis B or C, alcoholism Night shift work or circumstances that do not allow for a normal day-night rhythm Hypersensitivity to local anesthetics Cancer COPD, pulmonary disease (obstructive; FEV1 = 70), injury to the thorax or tympanic membrane, seizure disorder (WP3) Systematic endurance training to date (>1x/week >60min.). VO2peak <20ml/min/kg Orthopedic limitations Musculoskeletal diseases Previous surgery on the eye, especially the cornea, e.g. LASIK or corneal transplantation Inflammation or infection of the anterior segment of the eye, e.g., herpes zoster, conjunctivitis

Primary

MeasureTime frame
insulin sensitivity, hepatic and muscular fat content (at baseline, after 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training, after 24 weeks of high-intensity interval training, and after 12 weeks of training abstinence after 24 weeks of chronic training intervention).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Testing of changes in the production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory processes, senescence and fibrosis. Testing of changes in cognitive performance Testing of these therapeutic strategies to improve the quality of life, as well as the neurological condition (at baseline, after 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training, after 24 weeks of high-intensity interval training, and after 12 weeks of training abstinence after 24 weeks of chronic training intervention).
